IV. Design Works
1.Reweaving the Event City|
FENG Danyang

The project focuses on Old Trafford, where match-day crowds quickly fade into everyday inactivity. Although the site contains the stadium, canal, industrial heritage, MediaCity and communities, these resources remain fragmented.
Reweaving the Event City transforms the football match from a temporary stadium event into a driver of continuous urban life, using the behaviours of fans, visitors and residents to create a more connected and adaptive district.
1. Extending the Event Timeline:The match is expanded into a sequence of arrival, gathering, watching, transition and staying, turning short peaks into longer urban activity.
2. Generating a Behaviour-based Network:Routes of fans, visitors and residents are overlaid to form the Event Loop, slow networks and public nodes.
3. Reweaving Urban Resources:The Event Core Loop connects the stadium, canal and industrial heritage into a continuous public system.
4. Transforming Events into Everyday Life:Stacked boxes, elevated walkways, flexible frames and pocket parks absorb match-day crowds and support daily leisure, culture and community use.

2.Trafford United Again |
XIE Qiyang

1.空间缝合重构:搭建三级路网,增设跨铁路、运河桥梁节点修复场地割裂,强化南北贯通轴线;
2.量化触媒生成:以工业遗存为功能触媒,经迭代运算生成 POI 点云与混合功能融球,弱化单一用地主导业态;
3.混合院落营建:设立 90m 标准街区、超大尺度街区两套模板,竖向分层排布业态,用地退让打造通透聚合院落;
Focusing on two pain points—the low-value traditional industrial ecosystem around Old Trafford Stadium and rigid functional zoning fragmented by multiple dividing boundaries—this design reorganizes the site’s fractured spatial structure through the protective reuse of historically valuable catalysts including the stadium, granaries and the Imperial War Museum. Centered on mixed-use development, the design adopts a generative settlement algorithm to erase rigid plot divisions, creating permeable courtyard blocks with seamless integration of industry, residence, commerce and culture, as well as a sustainable compound urban order.
1.Spatial stitching reconstruction: Build three-tier road network and bridge nodes across railways and canals to repair fragmentation and strengthen the north-south axis.
2.Quantitative catalyst generation: Generate POI point clouds and mixed-function metaballs via 4 kinds of catalysts to weaken single dominant land use.
3.Mixed courtyard construction: Set two sets of templates (90*90 m²/180*180 m²), arrange functions vertically and form permeable aggregated courtyards.
4.Time-sharing activity overlay: Superpose daily living, production, commercial consumption and match-day gatherings to realize all-day block vitality.

3.Driverless Trafford |
ZHANG Xun

Focusing on near-future autonomous driving and shared mobility, this design solves urban parking shortages and explores how autonomous vehicles reshape urban density, street spaces and architectural forms. It adopts parametric tools to optimize the existing arterial road network.
Three core strategies are proposed:
1. Heritage Preservation. Original freight roads, dock waterfronts and railway alignments are retained and renewed into shared streets, linear parks and community nodes. Renovated industrial buildings integrate cultural and sports functions, creating an integrated framework of heritage and future technology.
2. Slime Mold Algorithm-based Road Network. A three-level network of autonomous driving trunk roads, feeder roads and pedestrian lanes is generated via natural optimization. The network supports traffic diversion during events and converts to shared streets on ordinary days for flexible use.
3. Autonomous-oriented Superblock Form. 80m×120m superblocks adopt a gradient layout of waterfront low-rise workshops, courtyard residences and vertical mixed-use buildings. With fully open ground floors equipped with autonomous vehicle stops and automatic delivery terminals, the blocks cancel fixed ground parking, realize zero static parking and complete a 5-minute living circle.

4.NeoHealthy City |
CHEN Yaqian

Based on the current state of the site, we keep buildings that have historical, cultural, and formal value. By analyzing the site's spatial structure, current land use, and user groups, and combining it with the most prominent football culture, the design takes the cyclical human activity patterns generated by football events as a prototype. Through reorganizing time, space, and activity types, it establishes a sustainable urban health rhythm. Design Strategies include:
1. From Individual Health to Collective Health: Integrate on-site and surrounding sports and recreational resources and facilities, while introducing and nurturing new activities and events to create new high-intensity activity nodes.
2. From Single Events to Daily Rhythms with Continuous Activities: Transform preserved buildings sites into public spaces that support activities for different age groups.
3.From Dispersed Functions to Layered Functions Driving Spatial Behavior: Establish connections between the disused canal and waterfront spaces, integrate green spaces, and accommodate everyday physical activity and community activities.
